On October 14, 2006, Governor Kathleen Sebelius proclaimed El Dorado
a "City of the Arts", the only town in the state to hold that distinction.

Glory of the Hills

The perfect place to start your tour of the beautiful Flint Hills, the Center helps you understand the wonder of this geographic treasure. A permanent exhibit, Glory of the Hills, depicts the Flint Hills as a land full of possibilities. Historic photographs and artifacts explore the lives of early inhabitants, settlers and farmers and ranchers who established the county's agricultural identity and grazed their huge cattle herds on the rich bluestem grasses.

Scenic Byway

HIGHWAY K-177 FROM U.S. 54

From the Butler County History Center, travel east on U.S. Highway 54, 4.75 miles to the junction of K-177. Travel north on 177 past scenic views of El Dorado Lake and State Park, 22 miles to the city of Cassoday, where literally thousands of motorcycle riders assemble on Motorcycle Sunday, the first Sunday of each month. If you can catch the Cassoday Café open, have a meal with some real cowboys! Keep going north out of Cassoday on 177, past Matfield Green, Bazaar and Cotttonwood Falls, toward Strong City (28 miles). This stretch of highway from Cassoday to Council Grove has been designated a National Scenic Byway and is one of the most enjoyable drives through the Flint Hills.

TALLGRASS PRAIRIE NATIONAL PRESERVE

Two miles north of Strong City, on K-177, is the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, a true national treasure. Absorb the essense of the Flint Hills here by taking a Prairie Bus Tour. Experience living history by taking a tour of the 1880's limestone mansion or immerse yourself in the beautiful grasses, wildflowers and wildlife by exploring hiking trails.


RETURN TO EL DORADO

To return to El Dorado, travel west from Strong City on U.S. Highway 50, 25 miles to Florence. Turn south on U.S. Highway 77 for 30 miles back to El Dorado. If you are traveling on a Friday night or Saturday morning, stop in Burns, off of Highway 77, at the Burns Café for one of the best pieces of homemade pie you've ever had! Once you return to El Dorado, enjoy a first-rate dinner at one of our restaurants and rest easy, after your trip in one of our lodging establishments.

Butler County History Center
This oustanding museum persents the fascinating history which makes El Dorado unique. The museum's permanent exhibit, Glory of the Hills, depicts the Flint Hills as a land full of possibilities. Historic photographs and artifacts explore the lives of early inhabitants, settlers and farmers and ranchers who established the county's agricultural identity and grazed their huge cattle herds on the rich bluestem grasses. Farming and ranching were essential to the economy, but it was oil that brought national attention to El Dorado. Located on ten acres, this modern museum offers the visitor the opportunity to walk the street of a 1920's oil boom town and view full size iolfield equipment of the early boom days in El Dorado. The museum hosts a lively schedule of special events throughout the year.

Butler County Courthouse
BUTLER COUNTY COURTHOUSE

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, this 1909 Richardson Romanesque-style courthouse was built at a cost of $100,000. George P. Washburn, one of the best-known of the 19th century Kansas architects, designed this structure to be the most dominant building in the community.

Freedom Memorial
CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM MEMORIAL

A brick path memorial honoring over 900 veterans, current members of the US armed forces and those who served on the home front. A six and one-half foot bronze eagle, "Sovereign Wings", is the centerpiece of the memorial. It rests majestically on top of a large limestone and brick base. Located on the Historic Butler County Courthouse lawn.

Missouri Pacific Depot
MISSOURI PACIFIC DEPOT

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, this 1918 Mission/Spanish Revival -style depot was designed by E.M. Tucker, chief engineer for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company. The depot began as a wooden structure in 1883 in a town of fewer than 2,000 people. It served as a center of activity and development for the community with news being brought by train and other news transferred by the telegraph located there. President Theodore Roosevelt stopped at the depot during his visit to El Dorado.

McDonald Stadium

This 1940 historic structure was a WPA Project (Works Progress Administration), originally named the Baseball Plant. Later, it was renamed in honor of Jim McDonald a longtime teacher and organizer of summer programs for the youth of El Dorado. Also, on this site is the El Dorado Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, open by appointment by calling 316.322.7400. Mc Donald Stadium is the home of the El Dorado Broncos Semi-Pro Baseball Team, the Butler Community College Grizzlies and the American Legion team as well as the El Dorado Wildcats high school team.

Memorial sculpture installed by El Dorado Rotary as a memorial to the 13 El Dorado residents who died in what came to be known as the "Wrong-Way Tornado". Dedication took place June 10, 2008, on the 50th anniversary of the event.
